Books I Want to and Do Reread

1. Every Day Is Mothers Day by Hilary Mantel
Im not sure why I like this novel so much, but I do, and feel the need to reread it every couple of years. The characters are strange and act unfathomably most of the time. Just like life, I guess.
2. Dover mystery series by Joyce Porter
The belligerent and oafish Chief Inspector Wilfred Dover is one of the most comic characters of all time. I laugh out loud whenever I reread any of the ten novels in the series.
3. Tree of Hands by Ruth Rendell
A wonderful and touching suspense novel about a grieving mother who suddenly finds herself caring for a child kidnapped by her mother. My favorite Rendell novel and thats saying something.
4. Clara: The Early Years by Margo Kaufman
As a pug lover, Ive read a lot of books about the breed. No one can top Kaufman, though. She is such a witty writer, and in this memoir of sorts she describes how she fell under the spell of Clara, a pug diva. Kaufman captures the breed to perfection.
5. Memento Mori by Muriel Spark
A group of elderly friends are troubled by prank telephone calls that inform them: "Remember you must die." Spark is dead on in her insightful novel about old age. Masterpiece Theater serialized this back in the 80s, I think, and it was gripping. Id love to rewatch someday.
6. Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
I used to reread this hilarious novel all the time. Then I lent my copy and never got it back. Its time to remedy that.
7. Ladder of Years of Anne Tyler
Feeling unappreciated and unnoticed, a middle-age woman walks out on her husband and children one day. Now that must be every womans secret fantasy!
8. Gone-Away Lake by Elizabeth Enright
A quiet novel about cousins who find an abandoned colony of summer houses and secretly take possession of one of them. Loved it when I read it as a child and I still do.
9. Charlottes Web by E. B. White
Everyone should be required to reread this classic. It breaks my heart every time.
10. The Elements of Style by William Strunk and E. B. White
A refresher course on how to write well, this short guide always inspires me to write succinctly.

The federal Department of Health and Human Services has just announced a contest that should be of interest to students of human anatomy and physiology who have a creative urge:
Make a brief video PSA (public service announcement) and youll have a chance to win $2500 . . . enough to cover the cost of your A&P textbook AND your A&P lab manual AND a candy bar!
Even if you dont win the contest, youll have learned some useful information about human health and disease . . . perhaps something thatll come in handy in your own life or your career. And maybe you can use it for credit in your A&P, micro, or film course, eh?
Check it out:
If you cant see the video in your news feed or emailed newsletter, then just click here to access it at the blog.
By the way, do you know what you should do about your A&P class if you have the flu?
NOTHING! Do not come to school. Do not work on your homework. The rest of us dont want your flu . . . and you need to rest and survive the flu so you can come back and work like the dickens to catch up with what youve missed.
{FYI, the image seen in the blog post is a colorized negative stained transmission electron micrograph (TEM) depicted some of the structure of the A/CA/4/09 swine flu virus.}

Stone Walls and Large Ancient City Described Along the Ohio River in West Virginia
Stone Walls and Large Ancient City Described Along the Ohio River in West Virginia
Stone wall or fort above Pratt, West Virginia, formerly known as Clifton.
Ten miles below the mouth of Armstrong Creek, on the Kanawha river, is another wall similar to the one in Fayette county described by Captain Wm. N. Page. It is on a high mountain, facing the river, just above the mouth of Paint Creek. The characteristics of the two works are so nearly alike that the foregoing description of the one at Loup creek renders unnecessary any description of the one at Paint creek, except to say that it is erected on a smaller scale.

At the base of the Paint creek mountain, too, is an extensive burying ground, similar to the one described. It is just where the village of Pratt (formerly Clifton), now stands; and so numerous are the remains that excavations for any purpose are almost sure to unearth skeletons, as well as stone, bone, earthenware, copper implements, and relics. [The burial are not marked by mounds]
At Sattes, opposite the mouth of the Coal River, there have been found evidences of a very large city, much larger than Charleston. There are also carved stones in different places on the river. Earthworks or fortifications are also found several places both on the Kanawha and on the Coal river

Exotic Filipino Foods and Preparation
Here are some exotic Filipino foods you may want to try...
The first exotic food on our list is "Sauteed Mole Cricket". In the Ilocano
dialect it is known as "Ararawan". The Tagalog people call it "Susuhong" and the Kapampangans call it "Kamaro".

Mole Crickets
are thick-bodied insect about 3-5 cm or 1-2 inches long, with large beady eyes and shovel-like forelimbs highly developed for burrowing and swimming.
PREPARATION AND COOKING
1.) Remove all internal organs on the stomach (others preferred not to remove its internal organs),wash and boil for 5 minutes. Drain.
2.) In a fan, sautee garlic, onion and tomatoes. Add the boiled mole crickets and mix until cook. Add salt to taste and msg.
Now, get 1 case of beer and lets start drinking...lol!!!

If you live near the sea or ocean, you probably had tried eating this marine plant. It is popularly known as "Ar-arosep" among Ilocanos. In English, it is commonly known as "Sea Grapes"
.
PREPARATION
It is very rich in iodine and is one of my personal favorite.
PREPARATION
1.) No cooking needed on this food plant, just wash it well and remove all foreign objects that are attached to it.
2.) No salt needed too, its already salty.
3.) Slices of fresh tomatoes can be added if you like.
It is very rich in iodine and is one of my personal favorite.
One of the most popular appetizers
among the people of Northern Luzon, especially the Ilocanos, is "Kappokan" or "Kilawin" The most preferred meat used in preparing "Kappokan" is goat and dog meat, although eating dog meat has drastically declined already in the past few years.
PREPARATION
1.) The whole goat is roasted on fire until all its hair burn and until its skin has turned brown. 2.) The goats skin and meat, which were partially cooked through roasting, will be shredded and chopped into small pieces or cubes. 3.) Spice
This Ilocano delicacy is perfect as appetizer.
(Suso)
Several varieties of snails are being eaten in the Philippines. The snail
on the above photo is locally known as "Susong Palipit". It is known among Ilocanos as "Agurong". There are also several ways of cooking snails in the Philippines. Ginataang Kuhol and Ginisang Suso are the most popular recipes though.
PREPARATION
1.) Wash thoroughly and cut the tail end of each snail (suso - the elongated snail) with a knife (no need for the kuhol)
2.) For Ginisang Kuhol or Suso, simply sautee garlic, onion, ginger and tomato then add the snails.
3.) Cover for few minutes.
4.) Add salt and msg (optional) to taste.
For Ginataang Kuhol or Suso, follow the same procedure less the tomato then add pepper and coconut milk.
(Kuhol or Snail)
These huge worms are also eaten in the Philippines
and anywhere else in the world. This exotic food, or should I say, weird food are taken from rotten woods and haystack.
PREPARATION
1.) Wash these huge worms well.
2.) In a fan, sautee them alive with garlic and onion. Add salt and msg to taste.
These tasty worms are very rich in protein.

Nutrition Based Therapy May Help Resolve ADHD and Learning Disabilities

Many people have become alarmed at the increasing incidence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and various learning disabilities. Some of these individuals conclude that the standard American diet may be to blame, since the foods people eat have generally changed a great deal compared with the fresh, unprocessed items more prevalent in meals decades ago.
An organization such as the Wisconsin Institute of Nutrition wants to help parents of children with these problems, as well as adults who have dealt with ADHD or a learning disability for their entire lives. The elimination of yeast in the diet is a primary strategy for resolving these issues. Taking an oral anti-fungal medication is another.
The yeast Candida albicans is not the same yeast found in bread, but rather is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. Overgrowth of this yeast may occur with antibiotic use in childhood. Antibiotics kill friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract and allow yeast to proliferate.
With the childs diet continuing to contain large amounts of foods that are favorable to yeast, certain types of brain activity slow down and lead to hyperactive behavior, problems concentrating and general learning difficulties.
